As for any team, DNF = Did Not Finish, thus not being counted at the end of the race is not only bad for the record but also for publicity. So, if at all possible to cross the line at the very end, is very important also for the morale of the team itself. Therefore, the last lap to get the checquered flag and be counted as a finisher, no matter how far back the car is classified.
